Position Description:
The Director of Donor Development provides overall leadership for the agency’s efforts to obtain philanthropic support to achieve its strategic goals, through annual, major and planned giving excluding grant writing. The individual who fills this newly created position will work closely with the Board of Directors, and the management team. The Director of Donor Development will implement strategies that increase support from individuals and private business, with a special emphasis on developing major donors
Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
- Coordinate all donor activities, including development, cultivation and solicitation of individual prospects and donors to diversify and increase income
- In collaboration with the Board of Directors and the management team, develop and manage a comprehensive major gifts program — identifying, cultivating and soliciting contributions from major donors and major donor prospects. Conduct personal visits with prospects and donors.
- Improving processes , solicitation, approaches, messages, communications instruments, databases and support systems to facilitate the development efforts
- Work closely with the Board of Directors and the management team to maintain and enhance strong relationships with current donors
- Develop and implement donor retention activities, including direct mail campaign as well as other development materials (newsletters, major donor materials, etc.).
- Collaborate with other departments to identify and design appropriate development strategies to support new and ongoing organizational initiatives.
- Stay abreast of philanthropic and charitable giving laws and work with the board to review, accept and monitor major and planned gifts.
- Monitor philanthropic market trends and identify new, creative and effective fundraising strategies.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no supervisory responsibilities
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will be a mature professional with a proven track record and a minimum of five years of successful experience developing and managing a comprehensive stewardship and donor relations program. First and foremost, the Director of Donor Development must have excellent organizational, communication, interpersonal and analytical abilities. S/he will be an innovative, strategic and quick thinker. S/he will be motivated, confident, disciplined and efficient, and have the ability to work closely and confidentially with high net worth individuals. While s/he does not need to have a background in fundraising for HIV/AIDS causes, s/he must possess a deep respect for the importance of donor relations, as well as the nature of AIDS Ministries/AIDS Assist’s mission and programs.
While no one person will embody all of the qualities enumerated below, the ideal candidate will possess many of the following professional and personal abilities, attributes, and experiences:
- A deep and demonstrable track record of at least five years and passion for donor relations management that manifests a commitment to maintaining current donors and a zest for cultivating new contributors.
- A self-starting and energetic leader with demonstrated interpersonal and team-building skills, who can lead by example, and has the ability to elicit the respect and trust of colleagues and donors.
- Demonstrated familiarity with donor relations systems and the ability to manage them is important. Proven success developing uniform policies and procedures for donor stewardship.
- Strong sense of ethical conduct that will inspire confidence with colleagues and donor prospects, while maintaining confidentiality in all matters as they relate to sensitive donor relations issues. Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and to use good judgment, discretion and sensitivity while handling development issues.
- Strong organizational skills and superior attention to detail. Ability to handle competing priorities in a complex development environment.
- Exceptional oral and written communications skills, used in one-on-one settings and in large group meetings. The ability to set the tone for an organizational culture that combines respectful collaboration with disciplined productivity within a business-like and process-sensitive environment. The ability and eagerness to be a dynamic and compelling ambassador to all audiences.
- Equal parts humor, integrity, compassion, and patience necessary to address the practicalities and desires of a nonprofit. An optimistic outlook and positive sense of humor is a must. Flexibility to work some evenings or weekends.
