AIDS Ministries/AIDS Assist currently operates five different housing programs. All programs are open to any HIV+ or AIDS infected client based on need and income status. Emergency Shelter Grant (ESG): Provides transitional shelter. ESG also offers emergency support for homelessness prevention. Supportive Housing program: Available in St. Joseph County, tenants may remain in their units for two years. This program is not permanent housing, but rather supports the client/family until permanent housing can be located. Supportive services are available along with rental assistance. The tenant signs the lease and AM/AA pays a subsidy, based on the client's income, to the landlord. The tenant is responsible for the remainder of the rent and the utilities. HOPWA or Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS: Clients may remain in the program for two years; rental assistance is provided on a monthly basis. AM/AA is the lead agency in a six-county area for dispersing these funds. Shelter + Care: Tenants remain in their units, provided they do not violate the lease with the landlord or the rules of Shelter + Care. On a monthly basis, this program provides rent and utility assistance based on the client's income. Currently all leases are in the name of AM/AA and the client pays rent directly to AM/AA. We then pay the full rent to the landlord and full utilities to each company. Permanent Supportive Housing: This program serves families & individuals in the Elkhart area. Low-income housing and supportive services are provided on a more long-term basis for those in need. Privacy Practices: For full details, you may view our policies here.
