HOUSING
AIDS Ministries/AIDS Assist currently operates four different housing programs. All programs are open to any person living with HIV+ or AIDS based on need and income status.
Emergency Shelter Grant (ESG): Provides rapid re-rehousing funds. ESG funds are used for emergency support for homelessness prevention to those living in South Bend.
Transitional Supportive Housing program: Available in St. Joseph County, tenants may remain in the unit for two years. This program is not permanent housing, but rather supports the client/family until permanent housing can be located. Supportive services are available along with rental assistance. The tenant is responsible for a flat rate rent with utilities included paid directly to AM/AA.
HOPWA or Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS: AM/AA is the lead agency in a six-county area for dispersing these funds. Supportive services are available along with rental assistance. Clients must be looking for permanent housing while in this program and rent is 30% of the clients income. The tenant signs the lease and AM/AA pays a subsidy to the landlord. The tenant is responsible for the remainder of the rent and the utilities.
Permanent Supportive Housing: This program serves families & individuals in the St Joseph County and Elkhart County. Client must be chronically homeless to qualify. Supportive services are provided and this program is long-term. Rent is 30% of the clients income.
***In addition to these services, AM/AA advocates on behalf of its clients for other housing programs such as Section 8 and programs through the Public Housing Authority. All clients receive case management when in our housing program.
